Carolyn Sykes has been teaching music
for over 20 years, starting in Australia and continuing
in the United States. She has taught in her private
studios, in a music school for children that she co-founded
in Melbourne Australia, in colleges, and now in her
own private school "Pacific Harps".
The students range in age from 4
years old to 75 years old, and all attend private
one - on - one lessons. The tuition covers playing
technique, music reading and theory, ear training,
rhythm and composition. Each lesson is tailored to
the specific needs of the individual student, and
is designed to be inspiring and fun at all levels.
Music is supposed to be an expression
of joy, and all of us that teach here try to make
it that way. Music does take some diligence and practice
on the part of the student, but the rewards are great.
Even for the small children we try to keep the rewards
coming with additional incentives and prizes.
Twice a year
we hold a student recital and a party that all are
welcome to participate in. We also hold adult playing
circles for those who would rather not perform in
such a formal setting as a recital. The adult students
bring their own harps and we all play for each other
in an intimate setting, followed by dinner.
We have harps
for rent, so that you don't have to buy one before
you have some experience, or before you are sure that
this is what you or your child want to continue with.
When you are ready to buy, we are happy to help advise
you, and help you choose the best instrument for your
needs.
Pacific Harps
is located in Pasadena, California. If this is too
far from you, feel free to ask us to refer you someone
in your area.
